In August 2005, Dr. Helmut Sohmen (蘇海文博士) kindly donated a sum for establishment of scholarships for outstanding students from the Asian region admitted to the University of Hong Kong's Master of Laws in Human Rights Programme. The objective of the award is to promote the protection of human rights in Asia and to develop a world class human rights programme, with particular focus on Asia, at the University of Hong Kong. A maximum of 10 scholarships will be awarded annually to selected students who have been offered places on the programme. Candidates must be nationals of an Asian country. Awardees may not take up any form of employment in Hong Kong during the course of their scholarship.
The scholarships shall be made on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights. Candidates are expected to have obtained a first or upper second class law degree from an officially recognized university.
