William F. Woo Memorial Scholarship

On the Donor

In memory of the late Professor William F. Woo, who was the visiting professor of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre of HKU and the journalism professor at the University of Stanford, Professor Woo's friends and family members donated funds to the University of Hong Kong in the form of an endowment fund for the establishment of the "William F. Woo Memorial Scholarship" to bring Chinese journalists to Hong Kong and the United States to study journalism.

Mr Woo’s late father, Woo Kyatang, was an editor in Shanghai before World War II, and later served as the editor of the Tiger Standard inHong Kong. In 1997, Mr Woo and his wife, Martha Shirk, also a journalist, served as Knight International Press Fellows in Hong Kong, contributed to developing of programs to further the professional development of journalists in China. Since then, Mr Woo visited China numerous times to conduct journalism workshops and lecture on free press issues.

Purpose and Scope

The scholarship shall be awarded to:


(a) undergraduate and/or postgraudate student(s) from Mainland China; and/or
(b) journalist(s) from Mainland China who have contributed to news media freedom

who are pursuing study programmes offered by (i) the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at HKU; (ii) the journalism programme at Stanford University.

The scholarship(s) shall be awarded on the basis of academic or professional merit. Financial need will be considered when candidates are of equal merit.
