Social workers are contributing to creative innovations in solving social problems in society. The Department of Social Work and Social Administration has pooled private donations from alumni and other persons for the establishment of this scholarship initially for a period of four years from 2013-14 to promote competence in knowledge building and research among Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students throughout their period of study. The top students admitted to the BSW programme in 2013 onwards will be awarded the scholarships and be assigned a mentor to learn to contribute to evidence-informed practice or action research in an area of social work.
The scholarships shall first be awarded to academically outstanding young persons, who are in their first year of studies of the BSW programme, on the basis of their HKDSE or recognised international qualification examination results. Where students are of equal standing, financial need may be taken into account.
A maximum of five new scholarships shall be awarded each year starting from the 2013-13 academic year.
Each scholarship shall be of the value of HK$60,000 to be awarded over four academic years in four installments, i.e. HK$15,000 per year on meeting the specified requirement: the awardee in the first year shall achieve a yearly GPA of not lower than 3.0 and contribute to at least 50 hours of work with the research mentor in order to be entitled to the continuous award of the scholarship in the following years.
