In 2011, the Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Scheme was established under a joint sponsorship and support by the Innovation and Technology Commission and The Hongkong and Shanghai Corporation Limited (HSBC) which is administered by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) as the Scheme Secretariat.

Purpose and Scope

Innovation and Technology Scholarship aims at recognizing outstanding non-final year local undergraduates studying any discipline, by providing a scholarship and a series of elite training opportunities, in order to widen their international exposure, gain industry experience, and nurture their passion and commitment toward science and technology. 

Awardees will be supported to attach to one or more overseas/ Mainland universities/ institutions between 1 June 2025 and 31 July 2026. At least one of the awardee’s trips must be longer than three weeks and at least one trip should be arranged to the Mainland China.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

  • Hong Kong Permanent Resident with the right of abode in Hong Kong;
  • Non-final year, full-time undergraduate students undertaking University Grants Committee (UGC) funded undergraduate degree in any discipline;
  • Preferably attaining Cumulative GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent) or above;
  • Having passion and intention to pursue career in innovation and technology fields; and with innovative ideas or engaging in InnoTech research that are align with any of the Scholarship’s “InnoTech Areas” as set out as below:
1. Life and Health Technology
2. Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
3. Advanced Manufacturing
4. Sustainability and Green Technology
5. Business and Financial Technology
6. Multi-disciplinary Technology and Others

(** Each candidate should only opt for ONE designated “InnoTech Areas”. Regardless of Candidates’ discipline of study, they are welcome to apply for one of the InnoTech Area so long as they have innovative ideas and currently engaging in research in such InnoTech Area, and intending to pursuing career in innovation and technology.


** A candidate may select “Multi-disciplinary Technology and Others” if his/her InnoTech aspiration does not fall within any of the other five InnoTech Areas.)


  • Achieve a satisfactory result from any one of the English tests below:
    TOEFL# (Internet-based test):
    Minimum overall score of 90 with scores for individual sections not lower than 21 on reading, 22 on listening, 21 on speaking, and 17 on writing;

    IELTS# (Academic Module):

    Overall band score of 6.5 or above, with no component below 6.0;

    HKDSE English Language Exam:
    Level 4 or above;

    International Baccalaureate (IB) Exam
    :
    Grade 6 or above on English B Standard Level;
    Grade 5 or above on English B High Level;
    Grade 5 or above on English A Language and Literature Standard Level;
    Grade 5 or above on English A Language and Literature High Level

    International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Exam:

    Grade C or above on Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language 0511;
    Grade D or above on Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0522;
    Grade 6 or Grade B or above on Pearson Edexcel IGCSE English as a Second Language;
    Grade 4 or Grade C or above on Pearson Edexcel IGCSE English Language (Specification A or B).

    # These are irrespective of overseas universities' requirements. (# Test must have been taken on or since February 5, 2023);
  • Well-rounded, have participated in extra-curricular and/or community service activities;
  • Able to display tremendous upside potential and benefit the most from the Scholarship;
  • Willing to serve the community and have a strong commitment to Hong Kong;
  • Possessing good communication skills; and
  • Have not previously received this Scholarship.

Importance Notes

  • Adhere to the selected "InnoTech Areas" throughout the entire selection process. Applicants may choose only ONE designated "InnoTech Area" when applying for the Scholarship.
  • Develop a comprehensive plan for the Overseas/Mainland Attachment Programme, illustrating how the proposed initiatives will utilise the Scholarship funding to advance and showcase technology-related innovations.
  • Clearly articulate your aspirations for creating original InnoTech ideations , as this will be highly valued.
  • Ensure the following key elements are demonstrated in your application:
1. Passion for Innovation and Technology

- Potential of contribution to the relevant industry

- Identification of needs for innovation and technology

- Understanding on InnoTech knowledge

- Aspiration and potential of tech-related ideation(s)

2. Personal Quality and Upside Potential

- Personal attributes
Clear and visionary goals
- Leadership quality
- Communication skills
- Utilisation of the Scholarship
- Creativity and innovativeness
- Potential value-added by the Scholarship

3. Willingness to Serve the Community and Commitment to Hong Kong

- Outstanding performance in extra-curricular activities and/ or community service
- Commitment to Hong Kong

Timeline

Applications for the scholarships will normally open in late-October / early-November each year, you can find the application details here during the application period. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview in March / April. The results should normally be available in May.
