Sola Gratia Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship, The

On the Donor

In September 2006, the Hui-Bon-Hoa Family generously set up the "The Sola Gratia Foundation Academic Fund" to provide scholarships and grants for students residing at Simon KY Lee Hall of The University of Hong Kong until 2011. In October 2014, Dr Max Hui-Bon-Hoa furthered his support of the Fund by making another gift to support scholarships and bursary.

In March 2015, Dr Hui-Bon-Hoa made a generous donation to set up "The Sola Gratia Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship" to encourage students residing at the Hall to pursue further studies at taught Master's and PhD levels at the University of London, his alma mater. The scholarships were first awarded in the academic year 2015-2016.

In 2018, the donor made an additional donation to support the continuation of the scheme.

Purpose and Scope

Category I - Current undergraduate students to pursue a taught Master's degree at the University of London:
 
- The Scholarship shall be awarded annually to a current undergraduate student who have resided in Simon K Y Lee Hall for at least two semesters and will be pursuing a full-time taught Master's degree at the University of London.
 
- The Scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merits, contributions to the Hall and interview performance.
 
Category II - Current students and recent graduates to pursue a PhD degree at the University of London:
 
- The Scholarship shall be awarded to a current undergraduate or, postgraduate student or an alumnus/alumna (graduated from the University within 10 years) who has resided in Simon K Y Lee Hall for at least two semesters and plans to pursue a three-year doctoral degree at the University of London.
 
- The Scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic achievement, contributions to the Hall, research calibre and interview performance.
 

- Candidates are required to propose their study programme leading to a doctorate over a period of three years at the University of London. The amount of award may not necessarily cover full expenses.

 

 

The Scholarship shall be awarded under the following amended regulations from the academic year 2019-2020:

Category I – Current students to pursue a taught Master’s degree at the University of London

1. One Scholarship shall be awarded annually to a current undergraduate or postgraduate resident of Simon KY Lee Hall, who has resided at the Hall for at least two semesters and will be pursuing a full-time taught Master’s degree at the University of London.

2. The Scholarship shall be up to a maximum value of HK$250,000, recipient shall be disbursed in 2 equal instalments. The first instalment will take place before the awardee’s departure. 

3. The Scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merits, contributions to the Hall and interview performance. Priority will be given to applicants with a conditional/unconditional admission offer. Financial need will also be taken into consideration. 

4. The Scholarship shall be awarded annually until the depletion of fund. 

5. Candidates are required to propose their own taught Master’s programmes of study. The length of proposed studies should not be less than one year and the amount of award may not necessarily cover full expenses.


Category II – Current students and recent graduates to pursue a PhD degree at the University of London

1. The Scholarship shall be awarded to a current undergraduate or postgraduate student, or an alumnus/alumna (graduated from the University within 10 years) who has resided in Simon K Y Lee Hall for at least two semesters and plans to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of London . 

2. The Scholarship shall be up to a maximum value of HK$250,000 per annum, disbursed in 2 equal instalments per annum and is renewable subject (for at most two further years) subject to satisfactory academic progress as determined by the Warden. The awardee is expected to produce sufficient proof on his/her academic progress at the University of London in order to be considered for scholarship renewal. The total value of Scholarship shall be up to a maximum of HK$750,000.

3. The Scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic achievement, contributions to the Hall, research calibre and interview performance. Priority will be given to applicants with a conditional/unconditional admission offer. Financial need will also be taken into account.

4. Candidates are required to propose their study programme leading to a doctorate at the University of London, over a period of at least two years. The amount of award may not necessarily cover full expenses.

5. Awardees may not change their programme of studies without the prior consent of the donor.
