In 2012, the Faculty of Engineering launched the Advanced Robotics Initiative striving to become a world-class player and as a leader in the area of robotics in Asia. As part of the kick-start activities, the Faculty has participated in the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Robotics Challenge. The robotics research activities will initially be focused on the development of robotic systems for operation in dangerous, degraded, and/or hazardous environments currently accessible only by humans, including nuclear reactors, oil rigs, and mines.
In 2013, the Arthur and Louise May Memorial Fund kindly offered to donate HK$100,000 annually to establish the "The Arthur and Louise May Memorial Fund Scholarship at The University of Hong Kong. The donation was increased with effect from 2015-16. The Scholarship aims to provide opportunities for young engineers to be equipped with the skills which are cruical for future leaders such as innovative thinking, ability to integrate diverse engineering knowledge and know-how for problem solving in the real world.
The Scholarship shall be awarded to outstanding engineering students under 35 years of age to participate in the Advanced Robotics Initiative project in the following aspects:
