In 2016, the University received a pledged bequest from the late Ms Betty Jamie Chung Yu-Juen (BA 1965, MA 1968) for the establishment of the "Betty Jamie Chung Memorial Scholarship" as a legacy to benefit future generations.
Ms Chung received her bachelor's and master's degrees at HKU. Keen on market research, Ms Chung had over two decades of related working experience in academic, social and business organisations in Hong Kong, the US, and Singapore. In 1982, she established a market research consultant firm in Taiwan and later, she completed a doctorate degree in Social Psychology in Canada.
Raised in a learned family, Ms Chung valued education and it is hoped that the Scholarship can encourage financially challenged students studying Philosophy, Psychology or Chinese Medicine in their pursuit of an all-round education. It is further hoped that the scholarship can support students in their participation in enrichment activities such as study tours, exchange or cultural immersion programmes, internships and service learning.
The Scholarship shall be awarded to local undergraduate students who are recipients of HKU's First-in-the-Family Education Fund or the Government's means-tested grant, and who either:
(a) completed PHIL1012 or PHIL1034 course or other equivalent preliminary course(s) for declaring major or minor in Philosophy; OR
(b) completed PSYC1001 and PSYC1004 courses or other equivalent disciplinary course(s) for declaring major or minor in Psychology; OR
(c) enrolled in the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine programme.
The Scholarship shall be awarded based on academic merit (minimum CGPA of 3.0 or above) and financial need. Candidates are required to submit a learning plan stating the nature and impact of proposed learning activities as well as the required budget.
