In 2016, the University received a bequest in the form of shares and cash from an HKU alumna of the 1930s, whose studies were disrupted by illness and war. In remembrance of the alma mater, a legacy was left at the Medical Faculty to establish two memorial funds - the "Hui Siu Wan Memorial Fund" (許少筠紀念基金) and the "Hui Ping Cheung Memorial Fund" (許秉璋紀念基金). Both funds are named after the donor's father and are aimed at supporting students and researchers in their pursuit of medical studies and the advancement of medical research.
Since its establishment, the "Hui Ping Cheung Memorial Fund" has been designated to provide scholarships to medical students in their pursuit of enrichment learning activities. In 2025, its scope in the form of grant was further expanded to include
financial support for shorter-term activities.
The Scholarship shall be awarded annually to outstanding MBBS students to support their participation in learning and research programmes that are duly approved by the Medical Faculty. Activities may include but are not limited to academic exchange, intercalation studies, research attachment, humanitarian work and/or any other experiential teaching and learning activities.
The value of each scholarship shall be in the range of HK$10,000 to HK$50,000. The number of
scholarships and exact value of each scholarship shall be determined by a Selection Committee based on the academic merit, activity duration and
location, and financial need.
The Scholarship cannot not be held concurrently with other merit-based enrichment scholarships administered by the University for the same activity. The Scholarship may be held concurrently with non-merit-based financial aids.
Upon completion of the Enrichment Year Programme, awardees are required to submit a report on their experience and reflections on the activities concerned.
