In 2007, the Hong Kong Geriatrics Society offered to establish a yearly sponsorship to a final-year medical student to undertake an overseas elective in geriatric medicine. The grant was made available with effect from the academic year 2008-2009. In 2017, the Society has offered to extend the sponsorship to cover up to two final-year medical students with effect from the academic year 2017-18.

The grant is intended to provide financial assistance to medical undergraduates to help meet the cost of return air passages and subsistence for his/her overseas elective undertaken in the final year of the MBBS curriculum.

Purpose and Scope

Up to two awards may be made annually for students in the final year of the MBBS curriculum for undertaking an overseas elective attachment in the area of geriatric medicine, primarily on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

A report on the elective attachment shall be submitted by the awardees within 6 months on completion of the elective period.
