On the Donor
In 2017, Professor Charles Loke donated a sum of HK$10M to continue the legacy of Loke Yew Scholarships that was founded at the University in the 1910s. In 1912, the late Mr Loke Yew was instrumental in establishing an endowment fund of HK$55,000 at the University and in 1915, when the University was facing bankruptcy, he offered a 21-year interest-free loan of HK$500,000. This loan enabled the University to remain open and to create four full scholarships for needy students from Singapore and Malaya to study engineering and medicine. The present Loke Yew Hall in the University is also named in his honour.
The Loke Yew Scholarships shall be resumed to provide scholarships for students of Medical Faculty. The awarding of the Scholarships shall start in the academic year 2017-18.
The purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage and reward students who have had a very different set of life experiences, growing up under trying circumstances yet have managed to succeed against adversity.
The Scholarship may cover the HKU composition fee, hall fee and other academic expenses, as appropriate. The number and exact value of scholarships are subject to merit of individual students provided that the total disbursement budget does not exceed HK$200,000 each year.

Purpose and Scope
The purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage and reward students who have had a very different set of life experiences, growing up under trying circumstances yet have managed to succeed against adversity.
The Scholarship shall be awarded annually to full-time undergraduate students of the Medical
Faculty on the basis of academic merit upon admission and financial need. Preference shall be
given to those from less advantaged backgrounds, those who belong to minority groups or those
who otherwise have had a harder early life than others. One new award shall be made each year
and the Scholarship is renewable until completion of studies under normative study period, subject
to satisfactory academic performance being maintained.
