In 2017, Professor Charles Loke donated a sum to continue the legacy of Loke Yew Scholarships that was founded at the University in the 1910s. In 1912, the late Mr Loke Yew was instrumental in establishing an endowment fund at the University and in 1915, when the University was facing bankruptcy, he offered a 21-year interest-free loan. This loan enabled the University to remain open and to create four full scholarships for needy students from Singapore and Malaya to study engineering and medicine. The present Loke Yew Hall in the University is also named in his honour.
