Joseph Chow Undergraduate Research Internship Award

On the Donor

The Joseph Chow Undergraduate Research Internship Award is established to 
commemorate distinguished alumnus Ir Dr Joseph Chow Ming-Kuen (周明權). Ir Dr 
Chow graduated from Engineering in 1964. He was the Founding President of the HKU 
Engineering Alumni Association and Hornell Hall Alumni Association. The Award will 
continue Ir Dr Chow’s passion in nurturing HKU students by broadening their horizons. 
As at January 1, 2019, the Chow’s family and friends pledged a total sum of donations of 
HK$1.5M. The donations shall be used to set up a scholarship endowment in support 
of undergraduate research. The fund shall be used to support undergraduate students 
taking part in a research internship outside Hong Kong under the guidance and 
supervision of academics under the “Undergraduate Research Fellowship Programme”.

Purpose and Scope

 A maximum of three awards shall be made annually to undergraduate students of the 
Faculty of Engineering or who are members of the Hornell Hall on the basis of 
academic merit and research potential. Financial need may also be taken into 
consideration as a secondary factor. 
 
 
 
3. For overseas research internships, the value of an award is up to HK$40,000. For 
research internships in the Chinese Mainland, the value of an award is HK$15,000.
