In July 2019, the S.K. Yee Medical Foundation made a donation for the establishment of enrichment scholarship fund in the LKS Faculty of Medicine. The establishment of the Enrichment Scholarship aims to encourage students of the Medical Faculty to undertake learning activities in either the medical or non-medical fields during their course of undergraduate studies, with the ultimate goal to enhance students’ all-rounded development and exposure before embarking on their professional medical and healthcare careers.
The Scholarship aims to provide eligible full-time undergraduate students of the Medical Faculty with financial support to accomplish enrichment projects or activities leading to a better sense of social responsibility and humility, and improved qualities of and considerations for altruism and social equity.
The Scholarship shall be awarded to full-time undergraduate students of the Medical Faculty who are undertaking approved enrichment programmes and/or other types of experiential learning projects or activities during their course of study. The projects or activities may include voluntary and community services, humanitarian relief missions, NGO attachments, health promotion, poverty alleviation programmes, and/or other types of self-initiated activities as approved by the Faculty.
The exact number of awards and value of scholarships to be awarded each year shall be determined by the Selection Committee on the basis of students’ academic merit, financial need and/or activity budget. Priority shall be given to students with financial need.
The Scholarship is intended to cover, including but not limited to, cost of transportation (cheapest economy airfare and local ground transport), living expenses, service/administrative fees for attachment at NGO/service partners, tuition fees for exchange/internship/field trips/training, bench fees for research attachment, registration fees at conferences, consumables for health advocacy projects/health exhibition, etc. There will be difference between overseas versus local projects on the basis of travel.
The Scholarship cannot be held concurrently with other merit-based enrichment awards administrated by the University for the same activity. The Scholarship may be held concurrently with non-merit-based financial aids.
Upon completion of the Enrichment Year Programme or the funded project/activity, awardees are required to submit a report on their experience and reflections on the programmes concerned.
