Reed Smith Richards Butler Scholarship
On the Donor
In 1989, Richards Butler, Solicitors (“Richards Butler”) in Hong Kong donated
to The University of Hong Kong (the “University”) two scholarships (the
“Scholarship”) of HK$10,000 per annum whose value was then increased to
HK$15,000 from the academic year 1992-93 until further notice. In 1999, Richards
Butler amended the terms of agreement such that the Scholarship would be made
available to students in their third year of the LL.B. degree. In 2003, the terms of
reference were revised so that the Scholarship would be awarded to students in their
second year of the LL.B. degree. In 2005-06 and 2006-07, the Scholarship were
available for award to two students who were in the “penultimate year of study” of
the LL.B. degree. In 2011, the Scholarship was re-named as “Reed Smith Richards
Butler Scholarships” and awarded to second year LL.B. students. In June 2020,
“Reed Smith Richards Butler” (the “Donor”) requested revision to the terms of the
Scholarship.

Purpose and Scope
One scholarship shall be awarded each year to a second year LL.B. student
admitted to the 4-year LL.B. curriculum, on the basis of the following criteria:
academic merit as shown in the first year and second year
examinations at the University;
other qualities, including leadership and personality; and
performance in the selection interview.
Two scholarships shall be awarded each year, with one award to a second year LL.B. student admitted to the 4-year LL.B. curriculum, and the other award to a third year law student admitted to a 5-year double degree curriculum, on the basis of the following criteria:
- academic merit as shown in the first and second year examinations (for LL.B. students) and the first to third year examinations (for double degree law students) at the University;
- other qualities, including leadership and participation in extra-curricular activities, and performance in the selection interview.
