Barry Will Memorial Entrance Scholarship

On the Donor

The late Professor Barry Fegan Will, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture from 1990 to
1998, was an instrumental figure in building up the Faculty in its early days.  In 1971,
he joined the Department of Architecture as Lecturer and had since contributed to the
formation of the then School of Architecture and subsequently the Faculty of today.  He
was also significant in establishing the Planning and Urban Design disciplines at HKU
in the 1970s and 1980s.
Under his deanship, the Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) course was reformulated into
a new Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies (BA(AS)) and Master of Architecture
(MArch) curriculum.  Thereafter, Professor Will continued to be actively involved in
architectural education as both Adjunct Professor and Honorary Professor at the
Department of Architecture.
In his honour, family and friends of Professor Will, as well as staff, students and alumni
of the Faculty donated generously as a remembrance of the man himself and his
contributions to the education of architects.  Proceeds from the memorial service, as
well as further donations from Dr HP Sheng, wife of Professor Will, and their son,
Mr Ewen Will, in the total amount of HK$500,000, will go towards the establishment
of the Barry Will Memorial Entrance Scholarship, to award top applicants for the
BA(AS) programme.

Purpose and Scope

Two scholarships shall be awarded each year to deserving full-time Year 1
students who have been admitted into the BA(AS) programme, on the basis of
(i) academic merit (i.e., public examination results and/or other academic
achievements), (ii) admission interview performance, and (iii) personal statement.
The two scholarships shall be awarded to one JUPAS student and one non-JUPAS
student.
3. The Scholarship shall be of the value of HK$42,100 each, and shall be disbursed
in the second year of study.
4. The Scholarship shall be tenable for one year.
