Erik Kvan Postgraduate Scholarship

On the Donor

Dr Erik Kvan served HKU for over fifty years in various capacities, notably being Head of Department of Psychology, Master of Robert Black College, and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, while remaining as Honorary Professor in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration to the end. His many other affiliations also spanned through to philosophy, English, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Community Medicine, Personal Development and Counselling Centre, and the School of Professional and Continuing Education.

In 1984, friends and former students of the late Dr Erik Kvan donated a sum to the University for the establishment of a fund to commemorate his contribution to the University over thirty-two years to provide for a postgraduate scholarship and a lectureship. In 2003, friends, former colleagues and students made a further contribution to the Fund.

Purpose and Scope

The Scholarship shall be open to MPhil or PhD students in the Departments of Philosophy and Psychology in:

a) the philosophy of mind or related areas in philosophy; or

b) any of the following areas of psychology: perception, personality, cognitive psychology or social psychology.

An applicant shall have been resident in Hong Kong SAR for at least five years prior to admission to read for the MPhil or PhD degree.

 

Application Timeline

Applications are usually accepted in Semester One of each academic year.

- Applications for the 2023-24 Scholarship will open around mid-October 2023.  Results are expected to be available in early 2024.
