The late Mr Fung Ping Shan (馮平山) was one of the first-generation Chinese entrepreneurs in Hong Kong and a staunch supporter of the University since its earliest years. In 1923, he became a permanent member of HKU’s Court; and in 1928, he contributed towards the establishment of a Chinese Department at HKU. The Fung Ping Shan Library was established in 1932 as the University's Chinese library through a generous donation by the late Mr Fung. In 1961, the Fung Ping Shan Library moved into the Main Library building and, with the consent of the Fung Family, the original library premises was converted into the University Museum.
The “Fung Ping Shan Scholarship” was established by the University as a “Donor Scholarship” scheme decades ago, in honour of the late Mr Fung, to recognise the achievements of outstanding undergraduate students.
